I have not found it necessary to clamp the wheel, just place the jack under the offending journal box. Otherwise Bobs description is pretty accurate. The tricky part in step 6 is getting the wool yarn (waste) so it presses evenly against the bottom of the journal, but does not climb very far up the sides. If a yarn is caught between the journal and the brass it will ignite and cause another hot box, which could have been the Rio Grandes problem. The pads we now use do not have that problem, but it is quite a job to get them into the oil cellar.
