The section men made better than minimum wage in 1939 plus some of them lived in railroad furnished housing. There were several with large families. However a lot of other railroad workers made more.
Durango conductor Thomas Martin earned $2,000 for 39 weeks' work. Alamosa yardmaster W.P. Cunningham earned $3,000 in 1939 and Alamosa night yardmaster Raymond H. Adkins made $2,825.
