The men who worked on the track, dug out snowed-in trains and blasted rocks for the Rio Grande really didn't get paid that much. Max Casias, born circa 1904, made $840 for 52 weeks' work at Falfa in 1939 according to the 1940 census form. The 1950 seniority list does not have anyone at Falfa but there was a Jose E. ``Max'' Casias in Antonito. His seniority date was 5-1-1925.
Veteran sectionman Narciso Rendon, born circa 1894, who worked both at Cumbres in in Chama earned $800 for 52 weeks of back breaking toil. Rendon worked on the railroad since 4-1-1925.
Newer men did not get to work fulltime. Chama sectionman Solomon Lucero, with a seniority date of 6-16-1936 earned $300 for 32 weeks' work. Lucero was born circa 1913.
Sublette sectionman Aron Trujillo, born circa 1907, also only worked 32 weeks in 1939, earning $480.
