I would guess the drifting north of Tres Piedras was still bad enough that a second engine would have been required to get through. As well the crew and engine had to return to Antonito/Alamosa. I suppose they could have returned light ahead of 426 but from what I have read from Jimmy's postings this appears to be the usual operating practice for winter helpers.
