I too have done riveting by heating using a torch. We used a piece of angle stock supported so that was open upward to hold the river while heating it.

It does appear that the tool on the riveting gun might be a bit too small for the riveting job being done. But then, riveting tools and even rivet stock are harder to find in these days than decades ago.
