Hi, Paul -
SFAIK, all of the surviving C&TS trestles still carry their D&RGW milepost markers.
Sadly, at least two of the smaller trestles have unfortunately been culvertized - see
the thread beginning with [
ngdiscussion.net], especially the good news posted by
Dick Cowles at [
ngdiscussion.net].
Here's the small trestle at m.p. 286.72 on June 16, 2008 - less than a year before its "culvertization" as part of the track upgrade in 2009. (Note D&RGW #315 and its eastbound train on 'Gravity Hill' just below the ridge in the top center of the photo)
:
The somewhat larger trestle at mp 287.50 that shows in the left background of this photo taken a few minutes later was culvertized in the spring of 2010, only a few weeks before the "Springtime" charter with green-jacketed #489
:
Here's Brian Jansky's photo of #489 passing over the new culvert on 05/25/10; the remains of the trestle are behind the fill at the far right
:
The steel shine of the culvert had been deliberately dulled by some Dark Olive Green Boiler Jacket
Enamel Urethane and handfuls of dirt hastily applied by a pair of ne'er-do-wells a few days before
:
Later I returned to the site, dug through the pile of rotted pilings, and recovered the milepost marker plates; one of them I gave to C&TS track superintendent John Matthews, the other - which measures 8" tall by 16" wide - I brought home with me to California
:
SFAIK - unlike their predecessor trestles - neither of these new culverts carry milepost identification.
