The senior hogheads, for one reason or another, did not earn as much money as their seniority would allow. Durango engineer Marvin C. Fitzer, (born circa 1875) the senior man on the Alamosa-Durango subdivisions, earned $2,570 in 46 weeks work in 1939, according to information given the census taker by his wife Catherine.
Salida top man Frank Fitzsimmons, born 1881, earned $2,400 in 52 weeks' work in 1939, according to information supplied my his housekeeper Maggie McGraw. The 52 weeks work is suspect because Fitzsimmons was known to lay off for long periods of time.
Each engineer could have made at least $500 more if they worked every day.
