Engine 474 engineer Clarence Spangler was slightly out of his territory. Spangler (Dec. 26, 1881-Sept. 3. 1978) lived in Delta with his wife Luella. While his seniority was from Gunnison to Grand Junction he spent most of his working life on the standard gauge.
Spangler began railroading rather late. His fireman's date was June 30, 1908 and his engineer's date was Nov. 28, 1911. He made $2,400 in 1939.
Both Spangler and his wife had eighth-grade education. Luella was 11 years older than her husband.
