Alamosa engineer A. (August) S. Johnson (1886-1968) was No. 27 in seniority on the former Fourth Division in 1940. Unlike Durango engineer Johnny (Jughead) Johnson, who hailed from Denmark, A.S. Johnson' family was from Switzerland. Johnson's father moved to Iowa where August was born.
Johnson started as a fireman on 10-14-1906 and was promoted to engineer on 1-6-1910. In 1930 he owned a home valued at $3,150. He earned $3,000 for 52 weeks work in 1939. He had a ninth-grade education. Son Howard Johnson, born circa 1913, was a carman in the Alamosa yard. He made $1,600 for 51 weeks' work in 1939. Howard still lived with his parents in 1940.
A.S. Johnson could have been engineer on the final runs of the San Juan out of Alamosa but he passed on Trains 215-216 but he passed when they came up for bid, the engineer' jobs going to Henry Nissen and Frank Owenby, who were two and three slots behind him respectively.
Johnson retired in the early 1950s. He and his wife Marie (1890-1983) are buried in Alamosa.
