Brian,

Others have answered your question about the retainng walls, but I might add that yes, it would have been very difficult to bring in enough morter -- the tracks were a long way behind construction of these walls and of the tunnel as well. I always wondered if they waited for the track to reached the east entrance for all the redwood timbers.
