Bill Bemis and his dog Bandit were quite a pair, and they both are quite a fixture staying up on Cumbres Pass every summer. I got to know both of them a little working up on the snowshed in 07 and 12 for a week. Bandit would ride on Bill's lap with his front feet near the handlebars wherever they would ride that quadcycle around to flag the train crossing twice a day and to check on our progress and the crew working on the pavillion.
Bill is a retired welder by trade, and when I asked him why Bandit always rode in his lap, he said "that was the ONLY PLACE Bandit would sit". Bill made a rear carrier, as well as a front carrier for Bandit, but he wouldn't use them, instead perferring to sit right in front of Bill.
They were quite a team and our hearts go out to Bill in his loss. I hope soon that Bill finds another 'Bandit' to keep him company, and I look forward to seeing Bill next summer up on Cumbres Pass looking after the place.
