Jer,

The "Denver Service Unit" is what the old Colorado and Wyoming Divisions are now called. It is a fairly recent (within the last decade) innovation. The "Denver Service Unit" is larger than the old D&RGW. It extends from Topeka, Kansas on the old KP west to Denver, North from Denver to and Including Cheyenne and the Main line to Granger, Wyoming. It includes all of the old D&RGW from Denver/Pueblo to Mounds, UT and the line south from Denver to Dalhart, TX.

It was formed when the company slipped the big weenie to a former Cheyenne Service Unit Superintendent by consolidating his SU into Denver. He had too many derailments in one year.

But no matter, thanks to Centralized Dispatching we all became Harriman Hookers...

As to what it is, it looks like one of the trinkets that they send out of Denver to keep the Toads on the Road quiet. It's the "Buying Manhattan" mind set. Enough trinkets and junk and some of them may buy the BS that "The company cares". I've got a lot of that junk laying around the house. Money Clips, Mugs, Puke Green Jackets, Grips all for either "Safety Awards" or, in some cases, "Attaboys". A Safety Award was something that was budgeted for each year to reward those who remained injury-free for the preceding year.

Whatever... The best safety awards that we ever got were coupons that could be used for items in the company store or for one share of stock, but it cost the company too much money as many went for the Company Stock, so that was curtailed after two years. The second best was a set of china that we only got 2/3 of because the Superintendent, in one of his usual hissy fits, made the statement "I'm not going to bribe those F-----s to be safe". That killed the safety awards and any remaining good morale along with it.
