It used to be the norm that people lived within walking distance of their place of employment. Only in larger towns and cities with streetcar lines were employees able to live beyond the site of their employers. Bear in mind that even the "affordable" Model T and A weren't always affordable to a large percentage of the workforce. It's only after WWII that the returning veterans were buying cars and moving into that new type of community called "the suburb."
