From Gato to MP 443 they were only one train. Most likely the helper was coupled into the train ahead of the road engine so it would be Extra 481-478 coupled west. Putting th helper ahead of the road engine would be the simplest way to do it.
There may have been reasons to have the 478 on the point so the crew would figure that out.
