Alamosa conductor W.S. McKibben did not have enough seniority to work every day in 1940. His 44 weeks of work in 1939 earned him $1,650. This is in contrast to neighbor Norman Roberts, who earned $3,000 as a conductor. Roberts needed the money as he had eight kids.
McKibben, born circa 1889, began as a brakeman on 9-8-1917 and was promoted conductor on 1-10-1923.By 1945 he was No. 20 on the conductor seniority list. He was off the railroad by 1956.
While McKibben had an eighth-grade education, he made more money than his sister-in-law Theresa Dixon, who had four years of college. She made $1,350 as a public school teacher in 1939.
