I just saw 487 in the engine shop portion of the Antonito shop building next to 463. Apparently all that needs be done on 487 is replacing two staybolts, its annual inspection, and maybe a few other very minor tasks.
Worth noting that both 484 and 487 had their boilers rebuilt (as part of a complete rebuild of both locos) during the 2003-2004 off-season; 484 was done in Chama and 487 in Antonito. This was a first for the Antonito shop crew and was necessitated by Chama shop capacity constraints. So now 484 is having its boiler done again by the Chama shop, and 487 will be next (it can probably operate for up to two more seasons before hitting the FRA 1,472 steam day limit).
Also noteworthy is the improved environment for working on locos in the Antonito shop. Tight fitting doors keeping out those winter winds, far better heating and ventilation, and excellent lighting, especially the new pit lighting that fully illuminates running gear.
