Late yesterday afternoon C&TS ran its first steam train, a work train that ran from Chama to Big Horn and return. Power was 463. It was run for a number of reasons, to break-in the 463, to check progress on trackwork and "tamp" the track in some locations where Max's crews have been working, and to move some loads of kitchen equipment to Osier. Marvin fired up the 19 at Antonito and moved the carloads of kitchen equipment to Big Horn, where they met the 463. The usual kind of railroad things conspired to delay the departure, which didn't occur until late afternoon, and the 463 got back to Chama about 3 a.m. But all went well. Bob and Gerald were very pleased with the performance of the 463. The track is rough but getting better. And we were pleased the 19 was able to get as far as Big Horn with the loads. Net net, a good day for the C&TS, and I was siting in Mill Valley missing all the excitement. The above is based on a report from Ed, and I hope all the facts are reasonably straight. Congratulations to all involved for a good start.
