Since the info for the derailment was limited, we don't how far off the track the 471 was, but it would seem to me, that unless the 470 could get completely past the 471, the 470 would have been north of the 471 and it would have had to back up to Barranca to let the 471 by before it could go down to Embudo for water.

In reviewing my post and the information from delay report for work extra 470 it appears I did not give enough detail and also did not specify that departure from derailment site was first to Embudo.
Engine 471 and empty refrigerator were re-railed at 3:00 AM.
From 3:00 AM to 4:00 AM repair track.
Engine crew and train crew for work extra 470 went back on duty at 3:00 AM. However, they did not depart derailment site until 4:00 AM, for Embudo.
Then engine crew and train crew for Train No. 426, now extra 471, went on duty at 4:05 AM and departed derailment site at 4:05 AM for Embudo.
Both trains at Embudo when extra 471 east depart for Antonito (probably 4:55 AM) followed by extra 470 east at 5:00 AM.
Extra 471 east arrived Taos Jct 6:02 AM and extra 470 east arrived Taos Jct 6:07 AM
Spoiler alert, an even worse situation coming up for Dec 18.
