The CF&I stel mill in Pueblo took a lot of the coal. When the Allan Mine opened west of Trinidad the end was spelled for the Gunnison narrow gauge.
The standard gauge coal train north from Trinidad usually had about 40 cars on the daily trip, pulled by a couple of GPs in the early years. That just shows how much better the standard gauge was at handling bulk commodities. It helped that the standard gauge train didn't have to go over Marshall Pass.
