the question did come up before we machined the axle. our consulting engineer thought there was little likelyhood of damaging the axle.

For those who don't know woodruff keys are shaped like a half a disc and fit into a matching slot in the axle. After about 1890 it was common to install the eccentric with a key.

I seem to recall that when the General was reconditioned in the early 1960s they had to install keys to keep her valve gear from slipping.
