When the SVRy 19 was rebuilt in the 1990's Doyle seal welded the firebox ends after rolling the tubes. I understand it is due to being an oil burner, with more potential firebox temperatures. The smokebox end was rolled and beaded.
To remove the tubes the ends were torched just inside the sheets and the long center portions were pulled through the slightly larger center hole. The smokebox ends were driven out with an air chisel, hard work but went fairly fast. The firebox ends had to have the welds ground down flush with the sheet before them could be driven out. I could do only about 40 per day, so it took several weekends to do all 231 tube ends.
Hopefully we will be starting this weekend to insert the new tubes and be rolling, beading, and seal welding them. Will post photos if I have time to take any.
