Some of the other persons listed on the same 1940 census page as William Giesking had some interesting occupations and pay. Railroad attorney Harry Alders made only $100 more than Giesking.
The railroaders made out better than other persons in the neighborhood. James Simmons, a box maker at the casket factory made $1,040 while his dad John, the manager at the casket factory made $2,100. William Welsh, a foreman at the United States mint, made $2,400, at least that is what his paychecks added up to. He and his crew probably stamped out far more than that in coins.
