I found a reference to the 36" gauge tracks at the Sunflower Army Ammunition plant being originally laid with hard maple rails, when the plant was built in WWII. When the narrow gauge track was scrapped about 10 years ago, there was a mixture of rail sizes, ranging from 30lb laid new, up to used 60lb. I had thought the wood rails were to save steel for the war effort, but that might not be the case. The Joplin plants were built to make explosives for the Tri-State mining district, but if you treat thing wrong, you get the same results with mine explosives and munitions.
