There are some good references for the flashier, "old west" portions of the war, in some of the serious biographies of the people involved. I don't have the citations at hand for the Bat Masterson bios, but a good starting point would be
Doc Holliday: The Life and Legend, by Gary L. Roberts. This is a well researched book on Doc, and the endnotes in the portion on the Royal Gorge War should give you lots of material for your research and other references to consult.
Another possibility is online historic newspaper accounts. Colorado has an extensive amount online, and the library of Congress has lots available, too. Certainly worth checking for period reports.
