Interesting ,Brian .Legend has it is the CP/SP had on-and-off plans to build a standard-gauge cutoff from the Overland Route to the LA basin ,a profit center for three railroads . When Senator Clark built the LA&SL ,that idea was largely shelved ,since Harriman controlled both the SP and UP at the time .The plan ,however ,lingered for decades . Another legend was that though the tracks from Mina to Laws were abandoned in 1938 ,they stayed in place for years .At the start of WWII there were military concerns that kept the line in place . It was torn up in 1943 .
