Hi, Greg -

Everything on the Southern Pacific is was relative to company headquarters in San Francisco.  Whether heading west from Ogden, south from Portland or north from Los Angeles, S.P.'s trains were going "west" toward San Francisco and "east" when headed away from San Francisco.
