Earl you are correct in that if there was switching involved the crew was paid local rate which is an additive but does not increse the miles paid per se.
Eldon Morgan is a great person. When I was with him I knew I was in good hands both as a railroader and personally. He knew my mom real well so I was careful not to misbehave. In other words not only did he take a very professional approach to his job, both as a railroad engineer and as a good union officer, but he also set a very good example for everyone to follow in the way they lived their lives. I always wanted to make a good impression on Eldon-still do as a matter of fact.
Now as to the railroad paying the crew 203 miles to run a steam engine, a 490 (K37) to boot, Chama to Alamosa, I think the crew should have paid the DRGW for letting them have all that fun.
In local talk Pueblo is often times pronounced pew-town refering to the smell coming out of the steel mills. "Peeablo" is not too bad.
