Notes from Eldon Morgan’s timebook, - First Half July, 1952
When used in helper service and the crew ran light and threw their own switches, they got paid $1.00 extra for the day. When used as Road engine and the crew did more than two set outs or pickups enroute, the crew got paid “Local Rate” which gave the engineer an extra $.52 and the fireman an extra $.40 for the day. In Dec., 1953, the basic day’s rate of pay for K-28’s was $15.73 for engineer, $13.83 for fireman. K-36/37’s was $16.16 for engineer, $14.52 for fireman.
In July, 1952 Eldon held down a fireman’s pool job on the Narrow Gauge Board. Crews were called on a “first in – first out” rotation. When on a pool job, he worked with the same engineer.
7/1. Engine 495. On duty Alamosa 255am, tied up Chama 1155am (7/2), 9hrs 30 min on duty. 134 miles claimed plus Local Rate for doing setouts/pickups as road engine. Engineer Groshart.
7/2. Eldon was not called within 16hrs of being rested in Chama. Until he was called for work, he claimed “Penalty Time” until called. Eldon claimed 6hrs, 5 min or 76 miles of penalty time until he got called at 1000am 7/3.
7/3. Engine 495. On duty Chama 1000am, tied up Alamosa 415pm. 7 hrs, 15 min on duty, 106 miles claimed plus $1.00 for running light in helper service. Engineer Groshart.
7/4-6. Off
7/7. Engine 491. On duty Alamosa 1100am, tied up Chama 1055pm. 11hrs, 55 min on duty 180 miles claimed plus Local Rate for switching as road engine. Engineer Groshart.
7/8. Engine 493. On duty Chama 1130am, tied up Chama 740pm. 8hrs 10 min on duty 111 miles claimed, plus $1.00 extra for running light in helper service for 2 Cumbres Turns. Engineer Groshart.
7/9. Engine 493. On duty Chama 1045am, tied up Chama 215pm. 4hrs 30min on duty 100 miles claimed, plus $1.00 extra for running light in helper service for 1 Cumbres Turn. Engineer Groshart.
7/10. Penalty time. Not Called. 100 miles claimed.
7/11. Penalty time. Not called until 1030am. 4hrs 15 min, 53 miles claimed.
7/11. Engine 490. On duty Chama 1030am, tied up Chama 840pm. 10hrs 10min on duty 160 miles claimed for 2 Cumbres turns. Engineer Groshart.
7/12. Engine 490. On duty Chama 1030am, tied up Alamosa 505pm, 6hrs 35min on duty, 122 miles claimed plus $1.00 extra for running light in helper service. Engineer Groshart. After being gone for 5 nights, Eldon got home to Alamosa.
7/13. Engine 494. On duty Alamosa 200pm, tied up Chama 1255am (7/14), 10hrs 55 min on duty, 161 miles claimed plus Local Rate for switching as road engine. Engineer Groshart.
7/14. Engine 497. On duty Chama 1145am tied up Chama 805pm, 8hrs, 20 min on duty, 114 miles claimed, plus $1.00 extra from running light in helper service for 2 Cumbres Turns. Engineer Groshart.
7/15. Engine 497. On duty Chama 1030am tied up in Alamosa 1140pm, 13hrs, 10 min on duty, 203 miles claimed (probably did Cumbres Turn, then worked through to Alamosa), plus local rate for switching as road engine. Engineer Groshart.
In addition was $5.00/day for each day away from home terminal.
Total for first half July, 1952 - $231.87
