My suggestion would be to contact Amtrak's toll free number regarding progress of either of the Zephyr's. If they are on time, or you can find out where they are, that's the time to shoot for going to trackside. At least then you know you will get at least one train, and perhaps get lucky with some freights before or after Amtrak.
