When I started training as an engineer on the SVRy I was fortunate enough to have an old timer serving as Road Foreman of Engines whom took us under his wings and taught us the mysteries of air brakes, controlling slack action, and what to do in emergencies. Every day I was around him I learned something new and useful. I also knew that I couldn't make any mistakes around him and get away with it. He was always asking us questions about air brake operations and if we couldn't come up with a good answer he would explain his answers without talking down to us. He kept you sharp and always learning more.
He had over 45 years of engine service with the MoPac on both steam and diesel. While he had removed himself from regular passenger service on the Sumpter Valley, I worked with him on a 6 car ballast train one day and he hadn't lost any of his skills. The Heisler responded to his every wish with no fuss or obvious effort on his part. A real joy to watch.
He has passed on now, but his legacy lives on as those of us fortunate enough to have served under him try to pass on his lessons to our newer engineers. Thanks Martin!
