It's always very interesting what some photos prove! Some don't seem to think that a photo is the best way, but as you point out, pipe gons obviously existed beofre the 50's. Likewise, many Coal cars were converted to flats in the same manner as the later ones all the way back to 1900. But, since railroads always seemed to be a little slow in reporting things sometimes, we have to sift through what has been handed to us.
