That story goes that the brakes froze up and would not apply enough to slow the goose down, so the motorman, and passengers bailed. Then as the goose rambled on down the hill the brakes began to warm up, and had just enough drag to spot the goose in front of the station.
Another good one is a goose loosing the drive shaft(Or just the brakes, depends on who tells the story) just below Lizard Head, the whirling drive shaft also tor up the brake lines. The goose slowed down after hitting snow drifts and everybody bailed out. The motorman called Ophir and before the agent could do anything it went trundling past. So she called the section foreman at Vance Junction, he took two big chains and laid them across the tracks several feet apart then waited for the runaway. The goose rolled over the first chain but the second one caught. The passengers and motorman were picked up and taken to Vance where some shop guys had repaired the goose. They re-boarded the goose and continued on there journey.
Ive been told this one was goose #3, no way to no for sure unless there is a report still around. I tell you it would taken a lot of convincing to get me back in that goose after all that.
