As I don't follow DRGW history as much as many posting here, this observation may be irrelevant, but here goes. I noted from SVRy paper work from the 1920's that at a point in time our engine 19 was operated for a day shift probably spanning perhaps 10 hours or more, then a night crew came on using the engine for perhaps another 10 hours, then it was turned over to the hostlers to service, so in another 4 hours give or take it would have been back out in service. This kind of use differs from the hours used today by the engines of the D&S and C&TS. True the there is fire in the boilers and pressure up every day making continuous service days between boiler washes, but they are not out pulling trains 20 hours out of 24 either. Back in the height of DRGW NG operation and the operation of the K37 boilers when they were on std. ga. engines would perhaps the usage been more like stated above for one of SVRy's engines? If so then the years of use would have to be weighted somewhat toward the early years putting more wear on tear on the boilers.
