I was wondering if there would have been a problem balancing the larger engines on the turntable. Since the engines are almost as long as the turntable there wouldn't have been a lot of "wiggle room" to position the engine in a balanced position. Sure, they wouldn't have had to be perfectly centered, but with an empty tender they might not have been able to get the whole thing on without putting more weight on one end than could be readily turned.
As for Durango, they were still using smaller engines as switchers so, even if they didn't like turning the larger engines on the turntable, there would have been engines around which could use it regularly.
Anyway, just a thoiught
