To clarify what the GT&C has historically claimed about #340, it's my understanding that "continuously operating" meant the locomotive's status on an active duty roster, regardless of whether it was in regular operation or not. The GT&C's
verbal history has stated that #340 remained on the D&GRW's active duty roster until being sold, which was not the case for #41. I, and by extenstion the GT&C staff that came before me, may of course be wrong on that point.
#41 was indeed out of service for most of the 1990s, but it was never removed from our active duty roster. The only GT&C steam locomotives that have carried that status are #464 (now operating at the Huckleberry) and more recently, #1 (which is now "active" at the CEdar Point & Lake Erie Ry., but not used in regular operation.)
According to GT&C records, we began operating #41 in a limited way during the summer of 1998. It was officially returned to regular operation on October 3, 1998. It was quickly apparent that further work would need to be done, and later returned to continuous regular service in the spring of 1999.
