The weeds really gave 483 a problem. At first, it could barely move the whole consist. It was then decided to cut the cars behind 484 off. Still too much to move. Finally, we able to leave Antonito with 483 with two DBG's full of ballast cut in ahead of the engine, and four or five cars behind. A tanker full of water had to be delivered just a few miles out of Antonito as 483 had used most of the full tank of water the D&RGW had provided when 483 was brought from Alamosa the day before.
That was quite a day. We left all but the ballast DBG's and the rider gon at Lava and went on to Big Horn where the ballast DBG's were left, then backed to Antonito, arriving at dark or thereabouts.
There were weed problems all day. I don't remember if 483 ran out of sand or not.
