Playground is far cheaper than engine sand, but it is far coarser and not dried. Probably would plug up the sanders, no wonder they had problems. I know that engine sand is available in sacks, the shortlines around here use it all the time, set the bag on the hood and pour it in. I assume it is dried before packaging, then stored inside.
