These pics/negs just sold on Ebay. I bought one.
Yes it is sad that both were cut up.
The shot you posted is 455 and 461 being cut up. 461 was started first.
the second shot notice the inboard cylinders of 461.
Dave Peterson is right about 455 in the middle of a shopping. I have seen the shot of her drivers with new tires with painted trim(IIRC). Im guessing she was probably had them re-installed before the official abandonment. Or at least to be able to roll her out of the shop, because she was most likely on jacks.
Also there was one other possibility for 455 or 461 to have survived without being stuffed. If Walter Knott had wanted another larger loco for the park, he could have bought one of them. And remember in 1951 the RGS valued 41 at around $2000, Walter paid $4000 for 41. So if 455 and 461 were valued at $1800 he might have paid around $3500 for one of them. Which is more than the scrap value. But Walter was probably happy with just 340 and 41.
Lastly here is a copy of the Neg I bought.
It show the passenger boxes of Goose 3 and 7 sitting in front of the roundhouse. This was done so the scrapers could use them to scrap the line.
