453s Whistle

February 26, 2002 04:46PM
`This message is sorry to say a somewhat belated one.To Brian Barr.Yes this is the real McCoy. I traded for this whistle believe it or not #361s
whistle and a nice looking and sounding New York Central 5 chime. In 1991 I decided to beat the bushes to locate the what I thought was the impossible,D&RGW whistles.Since then I found a total of four with only three left in my collection.I have never heard nor used 453s whistle. The reason being I don't want to hurt
the historicity of the whistle by installing a
external valve on it.Thats what I would have to do
to hear or use it on the D&S.The whistle still has
the integral style D&RGW valve.I got it just during my job transision between Golden Spike NHS and the D&S. I had to do some repairs to it,but left before I could try it.Therefore unless I go
somewhere else where integral valves are tolorated
I may never hear it.
I also have two other D&RGW whistles in my collection that are very rare my favorite is T-12
#166s whistle a shop built (in Salida) 3 chime flatt top and a 3 chime powell off of C-19 #341.
Not a rio Grande whistle but a beautiful sounding one is F&CC 4 chime built by kinsley in 1891 off of C-18 #317>Rio Grande whistles for sale are still out there but getting outragious in price unfortunately.
