Why the proliferation of hill turns with three engines? Is there a 3:1 ratio of what a K-37 can handle uphill versus down?

Also, was the Valley Line worked out of Salida at this time?

I would say the reason for 3 engines east on Marshall Pass compared to 2 engines east on Cumbres would be the difference in tonnage handled.

The tonnage for 18 cars of coal east out of Sargent was around 740 tons, plus. My post of Jan 12, 1935, for an east bound out of Chama, with 2 engines, showed tonnage of 457 tons for 5 loads 24 empties.

Yes, the Vallley Line was worked out of Salida at this time.
