The 999 has a certain grace to it, and shows the final evolution of the 4-4-0 locomotive just prior to the adoption of the 4-4-2 for express work. I'm glad that the 999 has its false reputation for speeds it never reached, as without that ill-deserved reputation we wouldn't still have it with us today!

It'd be interesting if the locomotive were ever to be restored to its original 86 inch driving wheels. I think it'd look a bit 'skinny legged'!
