You can throw coal into Eureka's firebox, but there are problems with doing so. First of all, Eureka being set up as a wood burner has simple flat plain grates in the firebox. There are no rocking grates. Also, the slots which open through the grates are rather small, and cleaning the fire would be a big problem. However, all is not lost. If you can locate a Baldwin Locomotive service center, coal burning grates were made for the class 8 18C. Also, you would need to order a new stack. The Radley Hunter stack in also set up for wood burners. Unfortunately, when we ran the C&TS we did not have an ADapta Kit handy.
Also, the compressor was to drive spikes. I have laid down about 1/3 mile of narrow gauge track at the NSRM Boulder City. Plans are to extend it out to 1/2 mile.
