SV Equipment Roster

February 15, 2002 12:16PM
This is the roster of Sumpter Valley and associated railway equipment that is currently not at the McEwen site. There is a lot more to be added, hopefully I can put some more on later today. This has also done to the best of my knowledge, help, and research as of date, so more help, criticism, or fine tuning would be very appreciated.
Enjoy, Taylor
Stockcar, U&N-SVRy, Number Unknown
There is a 2000 series stockcar on a farm next to the highway in the Bowens Valley. This type of car was rebuilt by the railroad around 1917, from a Utah & Northern 27 foot stockcar most likely built around 1882. The car appears to be in good condition, with quite a bit of hardware intact. It sits without trucks at the edge of a corral and is devoid of paint. Hopefully it can be reacquired by the railroad in the near future, but for now it is safe on private property.
Stockcar, U&N-SVRy, #2020
This is a standard 2000 series stockcar in very good condition on display at the Pioneer Museum housed in the Sumpter ValleyÕs Prairie City depot. Rebuilt from a Utah & Northern car sometime around 1917, this car and her sisters carried the livestock to pasture in the Spring and Fall. It was acquired from a private owner by the restoration group and restored for display. It has almost all of itÕs hardware, and is currently sitting on a pair of Ohio Falls boxcar trucks. The car is on loan to the Prairie City museum by the Sumpter Valley, and there are currently no plans to move it back to McEwen.
Boxcar, U&N-SVRy, #258-1603
The 1600 series of boxcars were rebuilt from older Utah & Northern equipment around 1917, the number 1603 in January of that year. This particular box at least, was equipped with Bettendorf freight trucks, and seems to be the only one of the 1600 series not sold to Honduras after the railroad was shut down. It and a another boxcar are currently being used in a barn located in Sumpter, and both cars are in very good condition for their age. The only pieces missing were removed by the railroad or buyer, and were not removed or destroyed by nature or vandals. Currently there are no plans for the boxes as they are on private property and in no immediate danger.
Boxcar, U&N-SVRy, #1060
Number 1060 is a good condition example of the type of boxcar that the Sumpter Valley Railway used through most of itÕs operations. Built for the Utah & Northern sometime after 1880, this car likely came to the Sumpter Valley with the first group of equipment purchased from the U&N. The date at which it was removed from service is unknown, but it was probably close to, or actually at, the end of operations as it is used in the same barn that houses number 1603. The car is in very good condition, the only alterations or damage done being from the railroad or owner. Like itÕs stable mate, it too is missing most all of itÕs hardware, most removed for scrap by the SV.
Boxcar, U&N-SVRy, Number Unknown
This is the only known boxcar that is still in itÕs original Utah & Northern 27 foot configuration. It was most likely built for the U&N around 1880, possible by the Ohio Falls Car Company. ItÕs history and number is unknown at this time, but it was probably acquired around 1890, and used till the end of operations. Located up Griffen Gulch, it seems to be in fairly good condition, the only visible damage being a window cut into itÕs side. There is no visible hardware, and its number has also either faded away or been painted over. It is hoped that a deal can be made with the current owners to return the car to the railroad to be restored.
Boxcar, U&N-SVRy, Number Unknown
A good example of a standard Sumpter Valley boxcar, most likely from the 1300 class. This class of car were rebuilt from Utah & Northern boxes around 1914. ItÕs history and number is unknown, but like most surviving cars it was most likely acquired around 1890, and kept in service until the end in 1947. The cars current condition and completeness is hard to ascertain as it is very difficult to see and has never been thoroughly investigated. It is hoped that in the near future the car can be either documented and examined, and preferable reacquired by the line.
Outfit Car, U&N-SVRy, #353-1069
Number 1069 is a typical older style Sumpter Valley boxcar, built originally for the Utah & Northern sometime between 1880 and 1890. Most likely it was rebuilt by the Sumpter Valley some time between 1912 and 1917. At an unknown time it was converted to an outfit car and was used on work and supply trains. It was sold with much of itÕs hardware intact to a resident of Baker City and is currently being used as a storage shed. The car is in very good condition and negotiations are under way with the current owner for itÕs purchase or donation.
Caboose, SVRy, #6
This car was completed at the South Baker shops in December of 1925, built to a design almost identical to caboose number 4. These two cabeese are similar to cabooses numbers 3 and 5, the main difference being coupula design. Numbers 4 and 6 had straight sided coupulas, while 3 and 5 had slanted. The caboose was used until the end of operations in 1947, at which time it was sold minus trucks to--------

1929 Lima Shay, New Mexico Lumber Co-Oregon Lumber Co, #7-107, C/N 3345
The last narrow gauge Shay ever built rolled out of the Lima, Ohio plant in November of 1929. This 67 ton three truck C-60-3 model was destined for the New Mexico Lumber Company of Dolores, Colorado. Arriving on January 2, 1930, and first placed in operation the next day, the Shay proved herself to big for the line by doing serious damage to the track. Due to this she was relegated to switching the NMLCO yard, and interchange service with the Rio Grande Southern. The depression hit the little lumber line hard, and the engine was repossessed by Lima. Shipped west on March 26, 1931, number 7 was sent to Hofius Steel & Equipment Co. in Seattle, Washington, LimaÕs west coast agents. On July 7, 1937, the Oregon Lumber Company purchased the locomotive, and it was rostered as number 107, though the number was never changed. She was used until the line shut down in 1947, but was kept rolling by being used to scrap out the railroad. After the last rail was pulled she was stored next to the South Baker shops until 1961, when purchased for service on the Black Hills Central in South Dakota. Due to itÕs poor condition, the Shay operated for only a short time before being set aside in a decrepit state. In 1970, it was moved to Hesston, Indiana, and restored over the next five years. Operated until severely damaged in the disastrous March 26, 1987 roundhouse fire, the Shay has been slowly restored over the years, and should soon be back in operation.
