The Le Chatelier compression brake is widely used on steam rack railway locomotives -- including Mount Washington, I think.
Putting the loco in reverse gear with the throttle closed (and an air inlet bleed open) turns the cylinders into air compressors -- so they would get very hot if you did not inject water for cooling (usually fairly hot water so you don't crack the cylinder castings). There is usually a separate exhaust and the loco comes down the mountain trailing a thin plume of steam.
