John West's assessment of Steven Hussar's work is on target.
Photographers like O. Winston Link, Jim Steinheimer, Dr. Philip Hastings and others have provided a legacy of images depicting railroading's human element in the closing years of the steam era -- dramatic photos of men working in gritty partnership with machines. Steven Hussar is a worthy successor to those greats.
In addition to his sensitivity to the human element, Hussar knows the power of black & white pictures. There's something to be said for the use of b&w images that recall the 1890's technology when the subject in your lens is a "window to the past" like the WW&F. With that said, Hussar's color photos are also superb. They are vivid in a way that makes you feel you're there with Hussar at trackside.
