Engine #499 was for sure painted in Green for a Rocky Club Excursion maybe in 1950. It was the last time a passenger train was run over Marshall Pass. The Salida shop pulled out all the stops and the engine looked beautiful.
I can't answer anything regarding the engines Rick mentioned and why they were painted green, but that 499 was painted green for a special occasion is indisputable. I have no idea how long it stayed that way.
