Having had a dozen or so article published over the last 35 years, I agree that the time spent in research and the cost of everything always far outweigh the income, if any, received for that work. While it is nice to get a check of some amount, it rarely, if ever, covers what was invested. Were this Wall Street, the deal would never fly.
I had a deal with one editor. For each article, he gave me a years membership in the Historical Society. When he passed unexpectedly, there was no record and I even received an abused renewal notice with my copy! Needless to say the RGM&HS didn't get my renewal, nor any more articles.
You reap what you sow!
