It is known as a spark ejector. I believe all six mikados have them. In the past the EBT has not used them very often but I suspect the one on #15 gets more use this year now that they are keeping the loco hot overnight. I believe they were original equipment on the steamers. There was a short article on them in a past issue of the FEBT Timber Transfer magazine.
