Folk:
At the risk of dead silence, does anybody have a solid estimate or a ballpark guess on:
1) what would be the cost savings on equipment maintenance if the C&TS track was essentially smooth mainline quality (not welded rail, but otherwise excellent)
2) what would it cost to bring 64 miles of track to that level (including widening/stabilizing the roadbed, real ballasting, lots of replacement ties, and replacement rail including perhaps longer sticks in places where it would make a difference)
3) what would it hurt (i.e., not-historically accurate, not as many clickety-clacks)
4) what would it help (i.e., i could set a cup of coffee on the bar in the snack car without it jumping overboard, not as many broken springs, women wouldn't groan when they get off in the afternoon, upgraded speed limits, etc.)
I guess I'm thinking if the C&TS wants to continue, it's gotta grow. To grow, it's gotta be a better tourist trap (without screwing it up for us) and it's gotta be cheaper to run year-to-year.
In any case, I'd appreciate any real info, as well as opinions about the last aspect (growth).
