K28's have counterwieghts on the drivers themselves so the #1, 2 & 4 drivers have cranks instead of outside counterwieghts. The #3 driver has a counterwieght on the driver as well as one on the crank. K-36-37's have counterwieghts on the #3 drivers only, therefore they have counterwieghts on all cranks.
Because the cab is low on a K28, the air pump is on the front. If it was mounted on the side of the boiler, it would be so high, the fireman could not see over it. The Oahu Ry versions of the K-28's had smaller 9 1/2" single lung air pump which could be mounted on the side of the boiler without restricting the view.
